The American Daffodil Society will host the 2019 Fall Forum, Fall Board Meeting (FBM), and Daffodil Show in Lynchburg, Virginia at the Hilton Garden Inn Lynchburg. The Fall Forum is an annual event that all ADS members and their guests are invited to attend with advance reservations. The event includes the ADS Fall Board Meeting, but it is intended to maximize the education and enjoyment of all members, at a very affordable registration fee.

Transportation Options

Lynchburg Regional AirportOur hotel is less than 1 mile from Lynchburg Regional Airport (LYH) ) which is served by five jets a day connecting through Charlotte with American Airlines. Please note: The airline flights fill quickly with lots of traffic in and out of Lynchburg. We encourage our guests to make their travel reservations as soon as possible.
 

Other airports with additional airlines include Roanoke, VA, (ROA) and Charlottesville, VA (CHO). Roanoke airport is a 1 hour drive to the hotel; Charlottesville is 1 ½ hours. Richmond, VA, is the largest airport (RIC) about 2 ½ hours from the hotel.

Amtrak serves Lynchburg twice a day with trains that run up and down the east coast.

The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle to and from the Lynchburg Regional Airport and Amtrak Train Station from 8am-10pm.

If driving, there is free parking available in the hotel lot.

2019 Fall Daffodil Show Schedule-Lynchburg

Continuing the innovation of past ADS Fall Forum events, Suzy Wert and Janie Vaughan will chair the Fall Blooming Daffodil Show this year. Entry of blooms for the flower show will be accepted between 2:00 pm to 4:30pm in the exhibit room on Friday, October 25, 2019. 2019 Fall Photography Show Schedule-Lynchburg

We Celebrate Daffodils by sharing our photographs with daffodil friends and participating in the Fall Forum photography show and competition. The current requirements for ADS photography shows will apply. Entries should be mounted on stiff card stock or foam core: maximum size of 14×18 inches; minimum size 6×8 inches. Conventional matting may be used, but is not required. Due to limited space please pre-register entries or directly notify photography show chair Robert Darling at  title=.

 

Schedule of Activities

Friday, October 25

  • 2:00 pm – 5:30 pm — Registration open
  • 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm — Entry of blooms for flower show accepted
  • 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm — Entry of photos for photography show accepted
  • 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm — Finance and Executive Committee meetings
  • 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm — Judging of flower and photography shows
  • 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm — Cash bar open
  • 5:30 pm – 9:00 pm — Flower and photography shows open for viewing
  • 6:30pm — Dinner buffet
  • 7:30pm — Guest Speaker Shaun Spencer-Hester will be speaking about the “Anne Spencer Garden”.
    Shaun Spencer-Hester is an Artisan, Historian, Fashion Designer, Interior Designer, Museum Curator, Playwright, Social and Community Supporter. She currently serves as the Executive Director and Curator at the Anne Spencer House & Garden Museum, Inc., located in Lynchburg, VA. She is the granddaughter of Edward and Anne Spencer. Her grandmother Anne Spencer is an American Poet mostly associated with the Harlem Renaissance School of Writers..

    Shaun is the daughter of Chauncey E. Spencer, Sr., a famed aviator and Tuskegee Airman. Her father’s flight suit, goggles silk scarf and papers are included in the exhibit “Black Wings” at the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC.

    Her restoration and curation work during the past ten years at the Anne Spencer Museum has been nationally and internationally recognized and documented throughout the years. Shaun provides personal tours at the museum and has hosted hundreds of visitors and guests. Shaun lectures are before university and college students and faculty. She also meets with scholars and academia from around the world.

    Shaun enjoys nature and spends much of her time in the outdoors. She enjoys long walks and bike rides through the Lynchburg trails and people watching. Almost every day she is in the Anne Spencer Garden, Edankraal. She tends to tidy things up, picking up sticks, filling in the gravel walkways, and will cut the grass if needed or trim the front hedges. She leaves the plantings and care of the fauna and flora to the Hillside Garden Club Members. Shaun became a Hillside member on January 17, 2018, and hopes to become a more active member in the near future and maybe even plant a few daffodils. “The Anne Spencer Garden includes a collection of Classic daffodils.”

Saturday, October 26

  • 7:00 am – 11:00 am — Breakfast buffet (included in room rate) open
  • 7:30 am – 11:00 am — Registration open
  • 8:00 am – 12 noon — Flower show and photography show open for viewing
  • 8:00 am – 9:00 am — Judges’ Refresher by Mitch and Kate Carney about Miniatures (all are welcome to attend; judges requesting credit register and pay $5 fee; free for all others)
  • 9:15 am – 12:00 noon — ADS Board Meeting. Non-Board members welcome to attend or visit local attractions in Lynchburg
  • 11:00 am – 12:30 pm — Registration for those attending only the Lunch and Learn Symposium
  • 12:30 pm – 4:00 pm — Lunch and Learn “Small” Symposium including demonstration of potting bulbs by Brent Heath and
    presentations about growing miniatures, growing daffodils in pots, and using small spaces. Results of the 25 Essential Daffodils survey will be presented.
  • 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm — Cash bar open
  • 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm — Bulb Auction
  • 7:00pm — Dinner
  • 7:30pm — Guest Speaker Denise McDonald, Director of the Old City Cemetery and Arboretum, will present “How Old City Cemetery became a horticultural center”.
    Denise A. McDonald has served as the Executive Director of Old City Cemetery Museums & Arboretum in Lynchburg since May 2018. Her mother introduced her to gardening at an early age, and her father shared with her his love of history. Since then she has been an avid gardener and is currently the Vice President of the Cottage Garden Club in Lynchburg, and she continues her passion for history through reading and visiting historic sites and museums.

    “Since the mission of the Old City Cemetery is to engage the community through history and horticulture, I feel like I am working at the perfect place,” noted Denise.

    Denise has completed the coursework for a Master’s in Nonprofit Leadership from the University of Lynchburg and will receive her degree in August 2019. She also has a B.A. from the College of William & Mary, and she is a graduate of the Harvard Institute for Educational Leadership.

    Her work experience has been in college advancement and alumni relations, public relations and marketing at several colleges, as well as the Richmond Symphony and Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

    Lynchburg’s Old City Cemetery is an ADS Display Garden because of its historic daffodil collection.

Sunday, October 27

  • 7:00 am – 11:00 am — Breakfast buffet (included in room rate) open
  • 8:00 am – 11:30 am — ADS Board Meeting and working group discussions – both Board members and non-Board members encouraged to participate.
  • 11:30am — Box lunches available before departure

Opportunities to participate in educational Symposia, Daffodil & Photography Show, the ADS Board Meeting, a lively ADS Bulb Auction, and a Bulb Swap. The 2019 Fall Forum Meeting is open to all ADS members and their guests with advance reservations.
