Harold Koopowitz “Judging the Bulbocodium Daffodils”. The hoop-petticoat daffodils are normally miniature daffodils although some of the modern hybrids can now approach over 50 millimeters in diameter. Those would be considered standard daffodils but will not be discussed here. The group can be divided into three main sub-divisions, 1). Species in section Bulbocodium; 2). Hybrids between species in section Bulbocodium and 3). Intersectional hybrids between Bulbocodium species and members of other sections. Bulbocodium daffodils are ideally suited to be grown in containers.

Features that set bulbocodiums apart from other daffodils are their expanded corona, narrow petals and thread-like leaves.

The International Register (1998) lists some 52 botanical names for daffodils in section Bulbocodium but some names belong in other sections. Since then, additional names have been added but there is little agreement about the validity of most of the names. There are autumn, winter and spring flowering bulbocodium species. There is considerable variation within any of the species for both shape and size, a prime example is N. obesus. I will discuss and illustrate some of the newest species as well as those most commonly grown.

Daffseek (July, 2022) lists 201 names for Division 10 hybrids, some of which are also intersectional hybrids. Some of these will be illustrated and new
    directions in breeding discussed.

Judging criteria will be listed, and common faults, such as excessive numbers of petals and unusual numbers of stamens will be illustrated and discussed.

He went on to serve as the assistant groundskeeper at Blithewold in Bristol, RI for 10 years before settling in at Green Animals 7 years ago.

Green Animals is part of the Preservation Society of Newport County, which also owns and operates many of Newport’s most famous mansions. The 7-acre garden is the oldest topiary garden in North America.

But Green Animals has Daffodils too, and Dan has been so happy with the response the Daffodil planting at Green Animals has received. With a little help from Tom Stettner, Dan has developed a designated ADS Display Garden. His goal each year is to expand and improve the collection on display. In his lecture today he will share with us the origins of the Green Animals Topiary Garden as well as his triumphs and challenges in the ADS Display Garden.
